Post-partum Depression (PPD) – is also called postnatal depression is a depression that affects women after the childbirth. The symptoms include anxiety, stress, sadness, moodiness, reduced in sexual activity, lost appetite, low energy and changes in sleeping patterns etc.

A study from the Journal of Affective Disorders found that responders of acupuncture treatments during their pregnancy had lower depression scored compared to the non-responders. This treatment continued until 10 weeks postpartum, and the results still showed lower scores of depression for the responders compared to the non-responders. According to NCBI publication, acupuncture with five elements of music could also reduce the severity of depression in female patients.

Post-Partum Depression Acupuncture

Acupuncture is very beneficial during post-natal, as this can improve new mother’s emotional wellbeing and avoid ‘baby blues’. During the breastfeeding period, acupuncture can promote breast milk for the baby and reduce the level of Lochia.

Another benefit also includes treatment for mothers who have post-partum bleeding and will restore their overall health and wellbeing. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine focus on improving ‘qi’ by nourishing the body of the baby and mother as well as reducing weak bladder.

It is important to treat postpartum depression, as it can be a potential risk for the new mother and baby. This could lead to self-destructive behaviour and unhealthy lifestyle. By doing acupuncture, the mother can have relaxation time and maintain her sense of well-being and as a result, will provide a happy environment for the baby.
