Acupuncture for Breech Baby

A breech pregnancy occurs when a baby is positioned head-up in the woman’s uterus and so the feet are pointed toward the birth canal. Normally, a baby will automatically turn inside the womb into a head-down position to get ready for birth. Roughly about 3-4 percent of pregnancies result the baby being breech. There are three types of breech pregnancies: frank, complete and footling (rare); as pictured below.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, these are some of the reasons which may lead to a breech bay condition such as: if someone has had several pregnancies or has had a premature birth in the past, uterus has too much or too little amniotic fluid, abnormally shaped uterus or placenta Previa. Usually a baby will be considered breech at around 35 or 36 weeks. Breech delivery is highly risky and may lead the baby to get stuck in the birth canal and so the baby’s oxygen supply get cut off.

Acupuncture and moxibustion  treatment can help in turning the baby into labour-ready condition. Acupuncture itself involves placing tiny needles that may stimulate certain points on the body. The needle itself will help penetrating the skin to alleviate pain and or to help various health conditions.  Moxibustion is a type of Chinese Medicine where herbs are burnt close to the skin on the fifth toes of both feet. These herbs usually come in a moxa stick which is burnt for about 15-20 minutes. Moxa has a tonifying and warming effect which will encourage the baby to become more active and lift its bottom-up in order to gain adequate momentum to summersault into the head-down position. This kind of treatment is usually started between 28 to 37 weeks of pregnancy.
