So, how can couples overcome this fear? Is it still possible for women over 40 to be conceived? How many percent of chance that couple over 40 can get pregnant?

This article will discuss about the above issues and how to overcome or be prepare for natural fertility for couples who want to conceive over the age of 40.

First of all, we need to understand the change in women’s menstrual cycle when they reach 40.  The condition of normal functioning follicle happens when the estrogen levels increase and signal the pituitary gland to release LH (Luteinizing Hormone). This LH then signals follicle to open and release a mature egg (ie. ovulation). After ovulation, then the corpus luteum triggers the progesterone level to increase and causing it to develop to be capable of nourishing a growing embryo.

  1. Monitoring your body weight

Body weight is definitely one of the important factors that needed to be monitored during pre-conception for both men and women. Being overweight or underweight for women can cause either over-production or insufficient production of reproductive hormones. These hormonal imbalances may result in irregular ovulation and therefore, lower any chances of pregnancy, either naturally or through IVF (in vitro fertilization).  Additionally, normal body weight will also reduce chances of miscarriage and other complications during pregnancy as well as labour. Maintaining a healthy body weight is also crucial for men’s fertility as it affects sperm count, motility, and morphology.  All of which increase the likelihood of a successful pregnancy.


A common method to determine whether the body overweight or underweight is called Body Mass Index (BMI) which is a ratio of height-to-weight. It can be calculated using the formula below:nhbnvhjn

The recommended BMI range for women and men who are trying to conceive is between 18.5 and 24.9. BMI over 24.9 is considered over-weight, while a BMI under 18.5 is considered underweight. Balancing the right amount of nutrients and regular exercise which ideally is 45 minutes about 3 times a week are highly recommended to stay within the ‘healthy’ BMI range for both pre-conception and during pregnancy. Do not over-exercise as it would negatively affect menstruation cycle and further decrease the chance of conception.

1. High Quality Proteins Food

The research found that couple who consumes more carbs, are less likely to conceive than those who have high intake of proteins. By eating 25% more protein and 40% less carbohydrate daily, a couple can double their pregnancy rates. These food include white eggs, fish high in omega 3 (ie. salmon) and chicken.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)is 0.8 grams per kilogram (0.36 grams per pound) of body weight per day. It is around 46 grams of protein for an average woman.

For vegetarians, you can consume legumes, beans or soy products.

2. High in Folic Acid

Folic acid is the most significant vitamin that the couple needs in order to nourish the baby’s brain. The first trimester is very important to take folic acid supplements for the development of the embryo’s brain. According to research, women with high intake in beef/red meat (ie. every day), most likely to have endometriosis than those who take fruits every day.  Other studies find similar connection between endometrial cancer/fibroids with these eating patterns. Women who ate beef everyday have twice as likely to have endometriosis than those who don’t.

The research also shown that women, who exercise regularly, will have less endometriosis than those who have low activity density. The result shown that women with average of 2.5 hours of high intensity activity such as cycling or jogging were 63% less likely to have endometriosis.

Dietary fat influences production of prostaglandins could lead to higher production of progesterone, which can influence the growth of endometrial tissue. 1st Trimester

What is Acupuncture role in the first trimester (Week 1 – Week 12) of the pregnancy?
