How Acupuncture Can Improve Patients with PCOS

PCOSPolycystic Ovarian Syndrome (P.C.O.S., for short) is a medical condition caused by an imbalance of sex hormones in a woman’s body. This can happen in teenagers as well as adults. One of the primary symptoms includes irregular menstruation for those suffering from PCOS. However, the symptoms can vary because it is an endocrine disorder; which is caused by irregularities of the core hormonal glands that regulate and maintain internal equilibrium or homeostasis.  What is common though, is an increased risk of developing a number of serious diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, cancers of the uterus and the reproductive system, and especially, infertility.

The Public Health Association of Australia estimates that 10 to 12% of the Australian female population – meaning about 1.5 million women – suffer from P.C.O.S, and other studies put the range even higher – at around 12 to 21%. And while there isn’t a cure, there are many ways to treat and control the seriousness of P.C.O.S. as it relates to infertility.

Acupuncture and PCOS

Acupuncture in the ancient art of Chinese medicine has played an important role in treating P.C.O.S. in women, by helping regulate menstrual cycles and bringing the female body back in sync with itself. Unlike allopathic drugs, which focus purely on breaking the cycle of infertility and provide uniform, one-size-fits-all treatments, acupunctural therapy for P.C.O.S. can be tailored to each woman’s unique hormonal levels, however minute they might be.

Gentle Healing Needles

As paradoxical as it may seem, acupuncture’s gentle needles – both the traditional and the electro kind – are considered some of the best alternative treatments for infertility caused by P.C.O.S. Because one of the main reasons for this kind of infertility is the production of higher-than-normal levels of male hormones like testosterone in the female body, the key to increasing fertility is to reduce the levels of androgens in a woman’s body.

And acupuncture does just that. By limiting the activity of the sympathetic nervous system – the primal part of your body that controls the famous flight-or-fight mechanism, leading to the production of hormones like testosterone – acupunctural therapy helps soothe and heal the hormonal system into producing less fighting hormones and more reproductive ones like estrogen, which help enhance a woman’s fertility cycle – mainly ovulation and menstruation.

Combining Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

The best part about acupuncture is that it can be used simultaneously with other forms of medicine – including traditional Chinese herbs.

Chinese medicine can enhance regular menstruation for women with PCOS.

recent medical paper, for instance, lists a number of traditional Chinese herbs that can be used to treat infertility and P.C.O.S. in women – and almost all of them can be used in conjunction with acupuncture.

Many Roads to a Better Quality of Life

By pinpointing the specific imbalances in a woman’s body, acupuncture is a long-lasting treatment for infertility due to P.C.O.S. – all without the harmful side-effects of traditional allopathic drugs like birth control pills. It is a self-sustaining method that allows the body to heal itself back into the rhythm of reproduction, helping women everywhere live long and fulfilling lives.d

Healthy Diet Benefits for Infertility

Food and nutrition play a crucial role contributing to a healthy body and reproductive system. In fact, the building blocks for hormones are found in the food we consume. For instance, antioxidants in certain foods assist in protecting the egg and sperm from free radicals. In the other hand, chemicals added to some foods could be harmful to your health and fertility.
It was found that the increasing consumption of sugary sodas and fruit, starches, red meat and trans fat is a big factor contributing to the rising of infertility rates nowadays. According to Dr. Walter Willett M,D., our bodies digest bad carbs (cookies, cakes, cereals, sugary drinks, chips, and white bread) quickly, and turn them into blood sugar. Insulin is then released from pancreas into the bloodstream in order to drive down the blood-sugar spike. Previous studies showed that these high insulin levels could inhibit ovulation. It also showed that women with the highest glycemic load (measure of amount of bad carbs eaten and how quickly they’re turned into blood sugar) were more than 90 percent more likely to have ovulatory infertility than those with the lowest glycemic load.

What is a fertility diet?
A recently-performed study by Harvard showed an 80% decrease in infertility with lifestyle changes made by switching to a fertility diet.

Fertility diet is the type of diet which includes foods that are rich in certain nutrients needed for hormonal function, production and balance, fetal development, egg and sperm health, and many more. This diet is designed to aid your body in balancing existing fertility issues, and also building up the nutrient stores and constituents for a healthy child.

Fertility Diet Nutrition guidelines

Eat a lot of organic vegetables and fruits

Harmful herbicides and pesticides in conventional produce have been shown to negatively affect both male and female fertility.

Male exposure to pesticides is linked to altered sperm quality and sterility, while female exposure may interfere with puberty, menstruation and ovulation, and fertility. Studies have also shown organic vegetables and fruits to have more nutritional values.

Choose organic and grass fed meat

Cattles that are raised conventionally contain high levels of added hormones and antibiotics leading to the domination of estrogen.

In the other hand, grass fed meat is low in saturated fat, and is a good source of protein and essential fatty acids.

For you who have endometriosis, it is suggested to reduce the consumption of red meat has there is a correlation between high red meat consumption and endometriosis.

Eat high fibre foods with each meal

High blood sugar levels can be regulated with increasing the consumption of high-fibre food.

This can help to reduce fertility issues such as PCOS and induces healthy hormonal balance. High fibre foods are beans, dark leafy greens, fruits and vegetables, and wholegrain and wholemeal products.

Drink lots of clean water

It is strongly recommended to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of clean, purified or filtered water daily.

The best waters to choose from are reverse osmosis and distilled.

It is not recommended to have bottled water as there are higher chances for it to contribute to hormonal imbalance as there might be estrogen mimicking chemicals in it. Avoid tap water, as it might contain traces of harmful pesticides from agricultural runoff.

How to Balance Your Hormones After Birth Control

Hormonal Balance

Many people today has been using birth control since they are teenagers and some of the doctors actually prescribed birth control to some of their patients who suffer from Endometriosis or PCOS. Birth control could reduce pain, reduce the incidence of ovarian cyst or regulate your cycle for some time. However, this is just a short term relief because once you stop taking the pills then the symptoms will come to the surface again. Therefore, it is recommended for couples who want to conceive to stop from taking birth control. We will explain in the next paragraphs how to balance your hormones after birth control.

The first step is to Nourish and Cleanse the body.

  1. Fertility Cleansing

The body has lost some of the nutrition when using the birth control and therefore it needs to be nourished by using herbs. Not only that, but the liver has to metabolize synthetic hormones and becomes overloaded and taxed during birth control use. The liver helps remove toxins and some of fertility cleanses to remove excess hormones. We do recommend Chinese Traditional Medicine because it has been proven for thousands of years.   The Chinese herbs will nourish the body and help liver function normally again. The Chinese herbs will also supportive, toning and cleansing for the uterus.

Secondly, fertility cleansing is an excellent way for couples who want to conceive to create a clean slate and helps the body to respond and utilize other natural remedies better. Hence, fertility cleansing will increase their chance to get pregnant.

  1. Fertility Diet

The change of lifestyle is also very important as this will improve your body to balance the hormones. Healthy diet is strongly recommended for couples who want to conceive.

Did you know that birth control or pills will have some permanent damage to the healthy gut bacteria? That is why it is recommended to consume yogurt, pickles and sour cream to provide the body with probiotics or good bacteria.

Birth control also affects the levels of Vitamin B12, Vitamin E, Zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin B2, and folic acid. Therefore, it is necessary to take multivitamin, or supplements and whole food iron supplement.  Taking good probiotic supplement is also good because it will balance and maintain the pH levels in the vagina.

Eating plenty of foods that has high in calcium also is strongly recommended, since the use of birth control can also thin the bones. The food includes spinach, broccoli, sesame seeds, seaweed, chia seeds and cottage cheese.

The next stage after cleansing is Herbal support

The purpose is to restore the ovulation process and improve hormonal balance.

There are some herbs that are recommended for couples:

  1. Fem rebalance

You can get the supplements in any chemist store. This Fem Rebalance will help couples to balance their hormones and reduce stress as well as rapid weight loss or gain. The herbs include Licorice Rt., Vitex, Chaste tree berry, Rhodiola, borage, Maca, vervain root , sarsaparilla root, wild yam root and black cohosh.

It is best used for couples who go through a stage of healing after birth control as pregnancy preparation but not used while trying to conceive. The reason being is because the body needs at least 3-6 months to heal without actively trying to conceive.

  1. Maca

This is known for one of the superfood for male fertility. However, this can also support female’s endocrine system and this root is very nourishing to the body. This will support holistic hormonal balance and reduce stress.

  1. Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis)

This will nourish the body and promote the blood flow in the pelvis region. It can be used as females’ tonic and fertility herbs and it is highly recommended for those who try to conceive. This is also part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is one of the well-known ingredients that Dr Christine

chinese herbal medicine

In addition to acupuncture treatment, Dr Cui also recommends the use of Chinese herbal medicine as it is proven that Chinese herbal medicine can be very effective. There is research to support this fact in the following articles:

      • Ried K, Stuart K. Efficacy of traditional Chinese herbal medicine in the management of female infertility: a systematic review. Complementary Therapies in Medicine 2011; 19(6): 319-331, by PubMed Health, said that:

“ Our review suggests that management of female infertility with Chinese Herbal Medicine can improve pregnancy rates 2-fold within a 4 month period compared with Western Medical fertility drug therapy or IVF. Assessment of the quality of the menstrual cycle, integral to TCM diagnosis, appears to be fundamental to successful treatment of female infertility. “ (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0034503/)

• Inoue T et al, OJOG, Vol. 3, No. 1A (2013) of Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology

“the oocyte development rate was significantly higher (58.0%) after herbal medicine intake than before (32.5%; p = 0.0003). Moreover, the successful pregnancy rate was significantly higher after intake than before (6.9% versus 0%; p = 0.0111). Herbal medicine may constitute a useful adjunct to assisted reproductive technology in women.” (http://www.scirp.org/journal/CTA.aspx?paperID=27774)
