Do the chances for success increase or decrease with repeated attempts IVF?

ivfThe statistic estimated that 1 in every 6 couples around the world suffer from infertility in around the world. The diagnosis of infertility could be devastating for most of the couples. However, there is good news. There are many ways to overcome infertility. One of the most well-known ones nowadays is IVF ( In-Vitro Fertilization)

IVF process starts with fertility drugs being injected to stimulate woman’s ovaries. Eggs are then collected from the woman through day surgery procedure. Next, they will be fertilised and matured. Egg and sperm will be placed in a dish in order for the fertilization to occur. One more embryos may be transferred to the uterus, others can be frozen to be transferred later.

Increase chances with repeated attempts of IVF

Recently, Medical Journal of Australia released a report that shows data from 56,652 women starting IVF treatment for the first time who went through 120,930 IVF cycles between 2009 and 2014. They excluded women who used donated eggs and embryos, The report was based on two measures; the live-birth and the cumulative live-birth rate for each consecutive IVF cycle. These women completed up to 8 cycles of IVF treatment.

The results showed that in overall, women who started IVF, 33% of them had a baby after the first cycle, and the percentage went up to 54-77% by the eighth cycle. However, the rate varied with the age of the women and number of IVF cycles performed beforehand. The cumulative live-birth rate did continue to increase along with repeated cycles. And, it has to be noted down that this is just a population estimate, and every couple condition is different (i.e body fat percentage, ovarian reserve level, etc).

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine to support IVF success

Acupuncture can help assist women in losing weight as body fat percentage could affect fertility, It will also help rejuvenate some oocyte characteristics that will enhance the delivery of nutrition to egg development.

Acupuncture stimulates certain points in the body to supply sufficient blood flow in the pelvic region, and along with Chinese medicine, nourishment will be provided to egg, thus increasing the quality of the egg. Sperm quality can also be improved by acupuncture, as it increases blood flow through blood vessels in testes thus improving the flow of nutrients to sperm, increasing sperm vitality.

How Chinese Medicine Enhance Fertility ?

chinese-medicineChinese medicines have been around for more than 2000 years and have improved well-being for so many people around the world. There are so many functions that couple can benefit from Chinese medicine as well. Some of the benefits include the following:

  1. Enhance fertility

The Chinese medicine can improve egg quality of women and therefore enhance fertility level.  As women grow older the egg counts are lower and egg quality may be lower too. Dr Christine can tailor treatments accordingly and give a prescription for the couple who want to conceive.

Furthermore, Improve the conditions of women who experience PCOS, endometriosis and other ovulation problems. Chinese medicine can enhance regular menstruation for women with PCOS. Acupuncture in conjunction with Chinese medicine can also treat patients with endometriosis, fibroids, UTI, thrush and uterine bleeding. By improving these conditions, as a result, it will increase the chance of getting pregnant.

  1. sleep coupleImprove the quality of sleep

Chinese medicine can also improve the quality of sleep of couples. They have seen some improvement after taking Chinese medicine in the first few weeks.  These couples could sleep better and even reduce blood pressure.

     3. Improve digestion and mental health.

Chinese medicine can improve the spleen function as well as kidney, therefore, it improves digestion and mental health in couples. In TCM, the spleen is the source of qi and blood supply, which responsible for distributing the nutrition and food to all of the body. Deficiency in spleen ‘qi can result in symptoms such as tiredness, loss of appetite, loose stools, abdominal fullness, indigestion, feeling moody and breathlessness.

By having Chinese medicine, your spleen function can improve and the nutrition will be distributed evenly to the whole body. As a result, this will improve your mood, mental health and digestion.

  1. Reduce the severity of cold symptoms

It is common for people to catch a cold and taking medicine during the first trimester is not recommended. Chinese medicine (TCM) is safe for couples who are in the first trimester or trying to get pregnant. Depending on which stage your cold is, if caught in early stages acupuncture and TCM can be very effective. Chinese medicine in conjunction with acupuncture can improve a couple’s immune system.

For example, in a Wind-Cold attack, acupuncture needles are placed in acupuncture points that eliminate Wind and dispel Cold and in points that treat symptomatic conditions such as a runny nose and stiff neck. This depends on each individual condition, each diagnosis requires different acupuncture points. For patients with weakened Qi, acupuncture may be used to strengthen the Qi at the same time.

sperm 5.Improve the sperm quality

According to research acupuncture with a conjunction of Chinese medicine can have a promising result of being pregnant. Men infertility account for almost 50% in infertility between couples. Therefore it is significant for men to have both acupuncture and Chinese medicine as well. Chinese medicine can increase the quality of sperm level and improve fertility in men.

   6. Increase blood flow in the pelvic area.

Acupuncture together with Chinese medicine can improve blood flow in the pelvic area and therefore can enhance fertility for couples.  According to research, TCM has promising effects in improving blood rheology, inhibiting aggregation of platelet, forming advanced glycation end products (AGEs), regulating oxidative stress, reducing blood fat, and improving lipid metabolism.  This means, not only a couple will benefit from enhancing fertility, but TCM can also treat patients with diabetes mellitus and will reduce the blood fat.

Four Ways to Combat Hay Fever this Spring

As spring is here, hay-fever-or-cold--how-to-tell-the-difference-136389813945102601-140501164859many people have started experiencing the symptoms of hay fever. Hay fever, which is also known as allergic rhinitis, is caused by the nose or eyes getting contact with allergens; such as pollen, dust mites, or animal hair. It is an allergic reaction , where the immune system perceives the harmless objects as ‘dangerous’ , and therefore producing mucus, as the nasal passages become inflamed.

A lot of people will tend to rely on antihistamines as the quick way out to relieve the hay fever symptoms.  However, studies have shown that antihistamines could affect fertility negatively as it decreases the blood flow to the uterus. Recently, a study shows that over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines could cause the reduced count of sperm, and its quality, also lower production level of male sexual hormones in the testicles.

However, don’t worry as there are still many other ways to combat hay fever this spring:

  1. Monitor the pollen count

With the advancement of technology these days, we can now track the pollen counts through number of applications, such as a weather app. The weather app will tell you the number of pollen based on your location via GPS. It will help you to plan your day, whether to take extra protection, or avoid outdoor activities when the pollen count is high.

  1. Consume more Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the best natural antihistamines, and it is easy to be found in fruits and vegetables, or supplements. Vitamin C helps reducing the amount of histamine secreted by white blood cells. In a study, participants were given intranasal spray containing vitamin C, and were asked to use it daily. After two weeks, more than 70 percent of the participants have found decreased nasal blockage and secretion.

  1. Consume Horseradish and Garlic

In addition to the consumption of Vitamin C, both horseradish and garlic are known to relieve hay fever symptoms. Horseradish has been used to relieve mucus congestion and clear nasal passages. It also helps breaking down the mucus in order for it to be expelled easily from the body.

Garlic is an excellent source of quercetin, which is natural anti-histamine. It has been used for thousand years in increasing immune system, and helps relieving nasal congestion and help preventing the symptoms from getting worse.

These two ingredients could be easily added to meals, or consumed separately in the form of supplement.

  1. Try Chinese Medicine and acupuncture

As it was mentioned before, hay fever is caused by an over-reacted immune system of one’s body. It is triggered by the imbalances in the body. It is also caused by the weakness of one of the organs in our body; such as spleen and kidney. Spleen system is very important as it affects the ability of one in digesting and absorbing the nutrients from food. Kidney deficiency is very common these days, as most people tend to get stressed out and experience adrenal fatigue.

Chinese medicine will not only help relieving the symptoms, but also help addressing the underlying cause of one’s condition and treat it directly. Regular treatment will help re-balancing the yin and yang in the body, thus help improving one’s health and immune system.

Acupuncture is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an effective treatment that helps easing symptoms of hay fever. A research shows that those who experienced acupuncture improved the most compared to those who have antihistamines.

When both acupuncture and Chinese medicine are combined, it will reduce the symptoms frequency and intensity as the treatments are carried on. It will help strengthening the Qi flow, therefore improving the quality of life.

As each treatment and Chinese medicine formulation is tailored to each patient’s condition, it will attack the underlying cause, and help improve one’s immune system to not over-react to allergens.

The Importance of Protein Intake for Couples Trying to Conceive

9
Nutrient intakes in foods play an important role in couples’ fertility. Based on a famous study called the “fertility diet”, in which it was followed by nearly 18,000 women trying to conceive and were asked to track their nutrition and lifestyle habits over eight years, the results showed that specific eating pattern was associated to lower risk of ovulatory infertility and infertility from other causes. Thus, food play a crucial role, as some of the nutrients in food can be helpful for fertility and others can be harmful for health and fertility.

What is Protein?

Protein is made of “building blocks”, called as amino acids. Amino acids are called building blocks as they have many important functions in the body, such as muscle growth and repair, building enzymes, blood proteins and hormones. As amino acids are the building blocks for cells in the body, it is important to ensure the intake of healthy amounts of protein from variety of sources.

Why Protein?

A study researcher said that, “Protein is essential for good quality embryos and better quality egg”. Previous studies have shown that there was a higher pregnancy rate amongst the high protein eaters rather than those who consumed more carbohydrates and less protein. Another Australian study showed that a study conducted on mice taking 25 different diets with various levels or proteins, carbohydrates, fat and calories, showed that, the mice on high protein and low carbohydrate diets had more babies than the others after 15 months. Consuming proteins from all groups will help increase the chance of the body to get good quality protein, as there are 22 amino acids within protein.

The Role of Protein in Every Stage of Conception8

Protein plays an important role, almost in every stage of conception. Protein is one of the key nutrients in the preparation for a healthy conception which begins on the time when the womb begins to prepare itself for possible implantation, which is the day 1 of a women’s period. Follicular phase comes after the period, in which follicles are being developed. Protein intake needs to be sufficient in this stage to stimulate the release of the egg. In the beginning of conce
ption, there should be
enough nutrients at the lining of the womb so that it is ready to a
ccept and support the fertilised egg. During implantation, egg is implanted into the womb and grows rapidly. This process relies heavily on the proteins getting into the blood supply in the womb. Proteins will also play important role in the development of the foetus’ tissue and bones. It is strongly recommended that proteins from all groups are being consumed; meat, eggs, nuts, legumes, vegetables, fish, etc. Try to avoid chemicals, or hormones added food, as well as herbicides and pesticides on food.

The Role of Genetics in Fertility

The role of genetics in infertility

Infertility is a common disease of the reproductive system where a person is unable to achieve pregnancy after 12 or more months of regular unprotected sex. There are variety of factors which leads to infertility and one of them is genetics. Fertility problems are passed on through genes under commonly inherited conditions such as endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

For Females

For females when they find out they have premature ovarian failure this suggests that they may have underlying genetic issues such as chromosome abnormality. Other issues could include single-gene defect passed from parent to child.

Infertility may occur when one or both of the prospective parents carry a chromosomal abnormality. Miscarriage might happen as a result of genetic issues being passed on to the baby and a low rate of implantation of chromosomally abnormal embryos.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

A common cause of infertility is PCOS . The causes of PCOS are complex, which often results from a combination of genetics, health and lifestyle factors. PCOS reduce the chances of woman’s ability to conceive and it tends to run in families. Immediate female relatives of woman with PCOS have up to a 50% chance of having the condition.

  • Endometriosis

This is a complex disease and its condition is characterized by the presence and growth of endometrial cells outside the uterus. According to research, both genetic and environmental influences that drive endometriosis, with 50% genetically related (DNA and genes) and 50% environmental factors, including lifestyle, what we consume and the air exposure. A large population-based study in 2002,on sisters and cousins of women diagnosed with endometriosis found an inclining risk for endometriosis among both close and distant relatives. The sisters were found to have a 5.20 percent higher risk of getting endometriosis that those without a sibling with endometriosis.

  • Early menopause

Most women begin menopause between the age of 45 and 55, this occurs when the ovaries stop producing estrogen. Genetics plays a big role in early menopause, research shows that a mother’s menopause can provide clues on her daughter’s menopause. The age at which a woman reaches menopause is 85% genetically determined. However, other external factors such as lifestyle and food also have a significant impact.

A Research leader, Dr Jan-Peter de Bruin, from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University Medical Centre in Utrecht said that: “A woman with one or more first degree relatives with a history of early menopause is liable to experience earlier menopause herself. Further, this same woman is also expected to start becoming less fertile and to be completely infertile at an earlier age, thus being at greatly increased risk of remaining childless if she delays childbearing. A woman’s store of eggs declines throughout her life. When stores are exhausted this triggers the menopause.”

For males

For males, if a man has a low sperm count, it can suggests there may be an underlying genetic reason associated. Men suffering from chromosome abnormalities often lead to low sperm counts and these disorders can be passed on to their offspring.

Genetics do play a significant role on infertility to a certain extent, however there are other factors which adds up to it. Hence , if you are struggling with fertility problems, there are still chances to improve your fertility through good diet and regular exercise, and also acupuncture and chinese medicine treatment.

Healthy Diet Benefits for Infertility

Food and nutrition play a crucial role contributing to a healthy body and reproductive system. In fact, the building blocks for hormones are found in the food we consume. For instance, antioxidants in certain foods assist in protecting the egg and sperm from free radicals. In the other hand, chemicals added to some foods could be harmful to your health and fertility.
It was found that the increasing consumption of sugary sodas and fruit, starches, red meat and trans fat is a big factor contributing to the rising of infertility rates nowadays. According to Dr. Walter Willett M,D., our bodies digest bad carbs (cookies, cakes, cereals, sugary drinks, chips, and white bread) quickly, and turn them into blood sugar. Insulin is then released from pancreas into the bloodstream in order to drive down the blood-sugar spike. Previous studies showed that these high insulin levels could inhibit ovulation. It also showed that women with the highest glycemic load (measure of amount of bad carbs eaten and how quickly they’re turned into blood sugar) were more than 90 percent more likely to have ovulatory infertility than those with the lowest glycemic load.

What is a fertility diet?
A recently-performed study by Harvard showed an 80% decrease in infertility with lifestyle changes made by switching to a fertility diet.

Fertility diet is the type of diet which includes foods that are rich in certain nutrients needed for hormonal function, production and balance, fetal development, egg and sperm health, and many more. This diet is designed to aid your body in balancing existing fertility issues, and also building up the nutrient stores and constituents for a healthy child.

Fertility Diet Nutrition guidelines

Eat a lot of organic vegetables and fruits

Harmful herbicides and pesticides in conventional produce have been shown to negatively affect both male and female fertility.

Male exposure to pesticides is linked to altered sperm quality and sterility, while female exposure may interfere with puberty, menstruation and ovulation, and fertility. Studies have also shown organic vegetables and fruits to have more nutritional values.

Choose organic and grass fed meat

Cattles that are raised conventionally contain high levels of added hormones and antibiotics leading to the domination of estrogen.

In the other hand, grass fed meat is low in saturated fat, and is a good source of protein and essential fatty acids.

For you who have endometriosis, it is suggested to reduce the consumption of red meat has there is a correlation between high red meat consumption and endometriosis.

Eat high fibre foods with each meal

High blood sugar levels can be regulated with increasing the consumption of high-fibre food.

This can help to reduce fertility issues such as PCOS and induces healthy hormonal balance. High fibre foods are beans, dark leafy greens, fruits and vegetables, and wholegrain and wholemeal products.

Drink lots of clean water

It is strongly recommended to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of clean, purified or filtered water daily.

The best waters to choose from are reverse osmosis and distilled.

It is not recommended to have bottled water as there are higher chances for it to contribute to hormonal imbalance as there might be estrogen mimicking chemicals in it. Avoid tap water, as it might contain traces of harmful pesticides from agricultural runoff.

Male Fertility – Azoospermia Fertility

Usually there is 1 in every 20 males have some kind of infertility. There are different kinds of cases of male infertility such as; different shapes, no tails, two heads or no sperms at all. The male infertility usually cannot be seen with the naked eye.  A semen test is required to see if there is a sign of infertility.

There are many different causes of male infertility; however, we will focus on Azoospermia fertility in this article. Azoospermia Fertility happens when there is virtually no sperm count in each ejaculation.  This kind of infertility in men only present in 2% of the average male population.

The causes of Azoospermia Fertility

Now that the other causes of male infertility explained, we will discuss the main causes of Azoospermia fertility:

  • Genetic
  • Injury to the genitalia
  • Blockage in genitalia
  • Surgery effects on the male reproductive system
  • Infection to male reproductive system
  • Miscellaneous causes such as; illegal drug use, steroids or antibiotics, excessive alcohol consumption.

In short, the causes of male infertility are due to either sperm transport or sperm production. There is the possibility of not having sperms at all and the cause of this is because lower semen level.

The cure and treatments for Azoospermia Fertility

Depending on the cause of male infertility, the cure can be from getting prescribed medications to surgery.

For example; if there is blockage in genitalia, then the doctor will suggest you to go for operation.

Acupuncture in conjunction with Chinese herbal medicine can also part of the cure for Azoospermia fertility when the cause is due to hormonal problems.

According to the article wrote by Bidouee F, Shamsa A, Jalali M. regarding the“Effect of acupuncture on azoospermic male”, they tested a couple who was trying to conceive. He went to 2 acupuncture treatments every week for 10 weeks. The results shown that his sperm count has increased to 10 million/mL with 10% good and progressive motility and 60% normal shape.

Another research also proved that acupuncture is effective. The research was conducted by Siterman regarding the effect of acupuncture on 26 males with azoospermic fertility. The result shown that seven out of 26 patients had sperms in their ejaculation and surprisingly 4 out of 7 had a sperm count of nearly 100 million/mL.

Another study also conducted by Jason Z Kremer, when analysing the treatment of male infertility to obstructive Azoospermia with Acupuncture and Moxibustion had a positive result. This case report documented a 33 year old male with a history of 10 year obstructive azoospermia and receives acupuncture treatments. Just after three (3) times acupuncture treatments in conjunction with TCM, the couple conceived naturally without any medical assistance.

In conclusion, acupuncture in conjunction with Chinese herbal medicine can increase sperm count because it improves blood flow in testis area. Hence, acupuncture can become cured to patients with azoospermia fertility.

5 Surprisingly Simple Habits that Enhance Fertility

  1. Monitoring your body weight

Body weight is definitely one of the important factors that needed to be monitored during pre-conception for both men and women. Being overweight or underweight for women can cause either over-production or insufficient production of reproductive hormones. These hormonal imbalances may result in irregular ovulation and therefore, lower any chances of pregnancy, either naturally or through IVF (in vitro fertilization).  Additionally, normal body weight will also reduce chances of miscarriage and other complications during pregnancy as well as labour. Maintaining a healthy body weight is also crucial for men’s fertility as it affects sperm count, motility, and morphology.  All of which increase the likelihood of a successful pregnancy.

A common method to determine whether the body overweight or underweight is called Body Mass Index (BMI) which is a ratio of height-to-weight. It can be calculated using the formula below:nhbnvhjn

The recommended BMI range for women and men who are trying to conceive is between 18.5 and 24.9. BMI over 24.9 is considered over-weight, while a BMI under 18.5 is considered underweight. Balancing the right amount of nutrients and regular exercise which ideally is 45 minutes about 3 times a week are highly recommended to stay within the ‘healthy’ BMI range for both pre-conception and during pregnancy. Do not over-exercise as it would negatively affect menstruation cycle and further decrease the chance of conception.

  1. Reducing artificial night-time lights

According to the study conducted by researchers from UCLA, Osaka University, and Japan Science and Technology Agency, sleeping with artificial night-time lights may significantly reduce fertility especially in middle-aged women. These artificial lights include TV, smartphone, tablet, bedside lamp, and many more. It correlates with fertility as it affects circadian rhythm or the body’s internal clock. During the time with less light, body’s internal clock signals the brain to pr
oduce melatonin. Besides causing drowsiness, melatonin is very important for women who are trying to conceive as it has strong antioxidant properties that protect eggs from free-radical damage, especially during ovulation.

Melatonin is also important for women during pregnancy since it can also affect the health of the unborn baby. Insufficient amount of melatonin from the mother can cause several behavioural problems in children, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism.

Women who are either trying toget pregnant or in the middle of pregnancy should at least have 8 hours of dark period at night. Additionally, it is also recommended to limit the usage of TV and other electronic devices to one hour before bed.

  1. De-stressing

Most people think that fertility is only determined on the physical aspect of the body, however, studies have shown that mental well-being also takes a huge part when women are trying to conceive both naturally and through IVF. Scientists believe that stress plays a role in about 30% of all fertility problems!

Stress affects a part of the brain called hypothalamus, which has a role to regulate hormones for the ovaries to produce eggs.  This causes the body for a late ovulation, or in some extreme circumstances not at all. It is called stress-induced-anovulation, usually occurs during a traumatic experience. Conceiving when ovulation is uncertain can be a very hard task. Additionally, when the body is stressed, it produces adrenaline.

It prevents the body to utilize reproductive hormones, therefore, causing infertility. Studies also have shown that stress can reduce male fertility as it impacts sperm quality and quantity.

Various ways have been discovered to reduce stress from going back to the nature, doing yoga, meditation, until using traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Picking a time to de-stress every now and then is essential to ensure that the body is in the best condition to conceive.

  1. Stop consuming alcohol

It is widely known that once pregnancy occurs, mothers should stop drinking alcohol due to the danger given to the unborn baby. However, alcohol is also proven to give substantial negative impact towards fertility both for women and men. Therefore, couples trying to conceive are strongly suggested to avoid the consumption of alcohol as studies have shown that alcohol can decrease fertility by 50%!

For women, alcohol directly interferes with the process that regulated ovulation and menstruation. It often causes multiple fertility problems such as amenorrhea (delayed/absent menstrual cycle), reduced ovarian weight, lowered hormone concentrations, and anovulation (lack of ovulation). Disturbed ovulation and menstruation process would significantly lower chance of pregnancy, both naturally and through the IVF process.

Alcohol is just as dangerous to men as to women. Studies show that men who regularly consume alcohol have a lower sperm motility and concentration. It also often results in decreasing number of sperm production and sperm quality. All to which lower the chances of conception.

Stopping the consumption of alcohol pre-conception would also help women avoid alcohol during pregnancy. Furthermore, couples with infertility treatment such as IVF should stop 3-6 months prior to the procedure. Alternatives such as alcohol-free mocktails should be considered to replace cocktails and wine in everyday life.

  1. Improve your oral hygiene

It may seem odd how oral hygiene can impact fertility, however, studies have shown that poor oral hygiene can both lower the chance of conception and increase the chance of complications during pregnancy. A good care of teeth and gums can actually boost a woman’s chance of pregnancy and lower the risk of miscarriages.

Poor oral hygiene can impact fertility because the bacteria in the mouth can severely affect the condition of the entire body. It begins with a simple gum inflammation. However, if it is left untreated, the inflammation and bacteria will begin to spread from the mouth to other parts of the body.  Once it
entered the system, the body will automatically fight the bacteria which cause a drop in the immune system, making it an unsuitable environment for conception. Oral hygiene is also important during pregnancy as when the body is fighting off the bacteria, very often the uterus is overrun by the body’s immune system to get rid of any infections which most likely will end in miscarriages or other pregnancy complications.

Therefore, routine check up to the dentist actually plays an important part when trying to get pregnant and even throughout the pregnancy to ensure no harm for both the mother and the babylose-weight-4
