Lifestyle and Fertility

imagesAbout 10 to 15 percent of the couples in the world suffer from infertility. Lifestyle factors play an important role in fertility. Lifestyle factors are ways of life and modifiable habits that can influence one’s well-being and health, which includes fertility.

Lifestyle factors could include; weight, psychological stress, smoking, alcohol and caffeine consumption, etc. One should consider changing the bad lifestyle habits prior conceiving a child. We will look at how lifestyle factors could affect one’s fertility.

It is shown that ovulation is heavily affected by excess body weight. Recently, a study also shows that excess weight also decreases the chance of pregnancy, and increases the probability of experiencing a miscarriage. Having an unhealthy weight can cause hormonal imbalances and create a problem in ovulation. It is the same with men, obese men are 3 times more susceptible to reduced quality of sperm.

It is suggested that before you attempt for conception, to exercise regularly, even it is as simple as walking for 30—45 minutes a day or swapping sugary drinks and alcohol for water.

If you are currently pregnant, maintaining healthy weight gain is also very important, as excessive weight gain is linked with a number of pregnancy complications; high blood pressure, blood clotting, gestational diabetes, and risk of miscarriages. And also, babies born to overweight mothers have increased risk of long-term health problems, and obesity in the future. Trying to lose weight during pregnancy is not recommended, as it will negatively affect the IQ level and the growth of the baby. However, it is definitely possible for the overweight women to gain less pregnancy weight than women with a normal weight with, without affecting the offspring,\

Stress is one of the most well-known conditions in societies nowadays. It could be physical, social or psychological. Moreover, nowadays, women also work not any less than men, pursuing a career, dream, and financial stability. While there is nothing wrong with that, stress that is resulted from shouldn’t be ignored.

Infertility itself could result in stress as well. It could take place in different forms, such as; societal pressure from family and other people, failures, treatments, diagnosis, etc.

In a research, it was shown that women who scored the highest level of stress had ovulated 20% less eggs than those who were less stressed.

Acupuncture and counselling are proven to help reduce the symptoms of stress and helped improve depression, anxiety and stress. A study from University of York consisted of 755 people with moderate to severe depression, concluded that both acupuncture and counselling have lowered down the depression scale from an average of 16 out of 27, to 9 for acupuncture and 11 for counselling. Secondly,  it is scientifically proven that acupuncture combined with five elements of music could reduce the severity of depression in female patients, according to NCBI publication.

Cigarette contains more than 4000 chemicals in it and the effects are associated with a number of potential health complications such as cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer, and also a possible decrease chance in infertility.

Men who smoke tend to have lower total sperm count, motility, density, normal morphology, and lower semen volume. In women, research showed that reduced ovarian reserve is higher in women who smoked than in non-smokers women with the same age, and similar fertilization and pregnancy rates. It is highly recommended to stop smoking prior to preparing to conceive, and also during pregnancy, as it may lead to miscarriage.

Sources of caffeine vary from tea, filtered coffee, to energy drinks. Australia citizens are known with their love for coffee, especially here, in Melbourne. While drinking coffee is enjoyable, the amount of caffeine consumption should be closely monitored as it may affect the fertility rate.

The women who miscarried or had a stillbirth in their study had an average of 145 mg of caffeine per day, and women who had live births consumed an average of 103 mg per day, indicating that there may be a narrow window for caffeine to impact fertility.

Nowadays, almost everyone has their cell phone on them at all times. The time spent on the screen has also increased dramatically over the years. It is true that cell phone has increased the effectiveness of the communication system these days. However, it does not come without negative effects.

A number of studies have shown negative effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic waves (RFEMW) created by cell phones on fertility. The usage of cell phone has also been associated with decreases in progressive motility of sperm, its viability, and sperm count, and an increase in abnormal sperm morphology. One study evaluating 52 men demonstrated that men who carried a cell phone around the belt line or hip region were more likely to have decreased sperm motility compared to men who carried their cell phones elsewhere or who did not carry one at all.

How spicy food affect infertility ?

Spicy Food affects intertilityIt is important for a couple who would like to conceive to consider a healthy diet. In this case, it is best to consume a different kind of food. There is no doubt that nutrition is essential for your fertility and overall health. It makes big difference in your body and its readiness to sustain a healthy pregnancy. Therefore you need to take good care of what you have to eat for daily consumption and this includes avoiding spicy food.

The following are reasons why spicy foods affecting the fertility and pregnancy:

  1. Spicy food can also increase the contraction for pregnant women. This means that pregnant women must avoid spicy food in their first trimester and last trimester.
  2. Furthermore, spicy foods may affect pregnancy because it causes heartburn in many women. Heartburn is most common in the last trimester, as your growing baby causes stomach acids to push up into the oesophagus.
  3. Spicy foods can cause yin deficiency which leads to poor quality of eggs, therefore can trigger polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
  4. Although spicy food is mostly safe for the baby, pregnant women need to take consideration if they are allergic to it. This means a healthy pregnant woman without any kind of gastrointestinal (GI) or gastroesophageal issues should be fine eating spicy food.

There are also other considerations that women need to think about spicy foods. These include the following:

  1. Does it make you aggravate morning sickness? Pregnant women usually very sensitive with their smell and have delicate stomach in the first trimester. If this happens, then you should avoid spicy food.
  1. Will it induce heartburn acid reflux?  This means that if you feel heartburn, you should avoid spicy food. Acid reflux results in heartburn, burping/regurgitating, and nausea.
  1. Does it cause Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)?  The symptoms include experience heartburn during the night, have the difficulty breathing, coughing, weight loss and black stool. It may indicate that you have GERD and you should stop eating spicy foods.

Spicy foods, in this case, are not recommended for pregnant women or those who are willing to conceive. It is better to consume a wide variety of food which contains folic acid, protein, low in fat, starches such as white rice and flour. More example of a food with high in protein includes chicken, beans, tofu, fish, peas, kale, broccoli and mushrooms. However, fish with high mercury is not recommended because it linked with fertility issues. Hence, avoid fishes such as; marlin, tilefish, swordfish, shark, king mackerel and bigeye tuna.

In conclusion, spicy foods are to be avoided if you are willing to conceive because it may cause heartburn and increase contraction as well. Dr Christine recommends taking healthy diet, reduce alcohol intake and do regular exercise.

Four Ways to Combat Hay Fever this Spring

As spring is here, hay-fever-or-cold--how-to-tell-the-difference-136389813945102601-140501164859many people have started experiencing the symptoms of hay fever. Hay fever, which is also known as allergic rhinitis, is caused by the nose or eyes getting contact with allergens; such as pollen, dust mites, or animal hair. It is an allergic reaction , where the immune system perceives the harmless objects as ‘dangerous’ , and therefore producing mucus, as the nasal passages become inflamed.

A lot of people will tend to rely on antihistamines as the quick way out to relieve the hay fever symptoms.  However, studies have shown that antihistamines could affect fertility negatively as it decreases the blood flow to the uterus. Recently, a study shows that over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines could cause the reduced count of sperm, and its quality, also lower production level of male sexual hormones in the testicles.

However, don’t worry as there are still many other ways to combat hay fever this spring:

  1. Monitor the pollen count

With the advancement of technology these days, we can now track the pollen counts through number of applications, such as a weather app. The weather app will tell you the number of pollen based on your location via GPS. It will help you to plan your day, whether to take extra protection, or avoid outdoor activities when the pollen count is high.

  1. Consume more Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the best natural antihistamines, and it is easy to be found in fruits and vegetables, or supplements. Vitamin C helps reducing the amount of histamine secreted by white blood cells. In a study, participants were given intranasal spray containing vitamin C, and were asked to use it daily. After two weeks, more than 70 percent of the participants have found decreased nasal blockage and secretion.

  1. Consume Horseradish and Garlic

In addition to the consumption of Vitamin C, both horseradish and garlic are known to relieve hay fever symptoms. Horseradish has been used to relieve mucus congestion and clear nasal passages. It also helps breaking down the mucus in order for it to be expelled easily from the body.

Garlic is an excellent source of quercetin, which is natural anti-histamine. It has been used for thousand years in increasing immune system, and helps relieving nasal congestion and help preventing the symptoms from getting worse.

These two ingredients could be easily added to meals, or consumed separately in the form of supplement.

  1. Try Chinese Medicine and acupuncture

As it was mentioned before, hay fever is caused by an over-reacted immune system of one’s body. It is triggered by the imbalances in the body. It is also caused by the weakness of one of the organs in our body; such as spleen and kidney. Spleen system is very important as it affects the ability of one in digesting and absorbing the nutrients from food. Kidney deficiency is very common these days, as most people tend to get stressed out and experience adrenal fatigue.

Chinese medicine will not only help relieving the symptoms, but also help addressing the underlying cause of one’s condition and treat it directly. Regular treatment will help re-balancing the yin and yang in the body, thus help improving one’s health and immune system.

Acupuncture is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an effective treatment that helps easing symptoms of hay fever. A research shows that those who experienced acupuncture improved the most compared to those who have antihistamines.

When both acupuncture and Chinese medicine are combined, it will reduce the symptoms frequency and intensity as the treatments are carried on. It will help strengthening the Qi flow, therefore improving the quality of life.

As each treatment and Chinese medicine formulation is tailored to each patient’s condition, it will attack the underlying cause, and help improve one’s immune system to not over-react to allergens.

The Importance of Protein Intake for Couples Trying to Conceive

Nutrient intakes in foods play an important role in couples’ fertility. Based on a famous study called the “fertility diet”, in which it was followed by nearly 18,000 women trying to conceive and were asked to track their nutrition and lifestyle habits over eight years, the results showed that specific eating pattern was associated to lower risk of ovulatory infertility and infertility from other causes. Thus, food play a crucial role, as some of the nutrients in food can be helpful for fertility and others can be harmful for health and fertility.

What is Protein?

Protein is made of “building blocks”, called as amino acids. Amino acids are called building blocks as they have many important functions in the body, such as muscle growth and repair, building enzymes, blood proteins and hormones. As amino acids are the building blocks for cells in the body, it is important to ensure the intake of healthy amounts of protein from variety of sources.

Why Protein?

A study researcher said that, “Protein is essential for good quality embryos and better quality egg”. Previous studies have shown that there was a higher pregnancy rate amongst the high protein eaters rather than those who consumed more carbohydrates and less protein. Another Australian study showed that a study conducted on mice taking 25 different diets with various levels or proteins, carbohydrates, fat and calories, showed that, the mice on high protein and low carbohydrate diets had more babies than the others after 15 months. Consuming proteins from all groups will help increase the chance of the body to get good quality protein, as there are 22 amino acids within protein.

The Role of Protein in Every Stage of Conception8

Protein plays an important role, almost in every stage of conception. Protein is one of the key nutrients in the preparation for a healthy conception which begins on the time when the womb begins to prepare itself for possible implantation, which is the day 1 of a women’s period. Follicular phase comes after the period, in which follicles are being developed. Protein intake needs to be sufficient in this stage to stimulate the release of the egg. In the beginning of conce
ption, there should be
enough nutrients at the lining of the womb so that it is ready to a
ccept and support the fertilised egg. During implantation, egg is implanted into the womb and grows rapidly. This process relies heavily on the proteins getting into the blood supply in the womb. Proteins will also play important role in the development of the foetus’ tissue and bones. It is strongly recommended that proteins from all groups are being consumed; meat, eggs, nuts, legumes, vegetables, fish, etc. Try to avoid chemicals, or hormones added food, as well as herbicides and pesticides on food.

The Role of Genetics in Fertility

The role of genetics in infertility

Infertility is a common disease of the reproductive system where a person is unable to achieve pregnancy after 12 or more months of regular unprotected sex. There are variety of factors which leads to infertility and one of them is genetics. Fertility problems are passed on through genes under commonly inherited conditions such as endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

For Females

For females when they find out they have premature ovarian failure this suggests that they may have underlying genetic issues such as chromosome abnormality. Other issues could include single-gene defect passed from parent to child.

Infertility may occur when one or both of the prospective parents carry a chromosomal abnormality. Miscarriage might happen as a result of genetic issues being passed on to the baby and a low rate of implantation of chromosomally abnormal embryos.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

A common cause of infertility is PCOS . The causes of PCOS are complex, which often results from a combination of genetics, health and lifestyle factors. PCOS reduce the chances of woman’s ability to conceive and it tends to run in families. Immediate female relatives of woman with PCOS have up to a 50% chance of having the condition.

  • Endometriosis

This is a complex disease and its condition is characterized by the presence and growth of endometrial cells outside the uterus. According to research, both genetic and environmental influences that drive endometriosis, with 50% genetically related (DNA and genes) and 50% environmental factors, including lifestyle, what we consume and the air exposure. A large population-based study in 2002,on sisters and cousins of women diagnosed with endometriosis found an inclining risk for endometriosis among both close and distant relatives. The sisters were found to have a 5.20 percent higher risk of getting endometriosis that those without a sibling with endometriosis.

  • Early menopause

Most women begin menopause between the age of 45 and 55, this occurs when the ovaries stop producing estrogen. Genetics plays a big role in early menopause, research shows that a mother’s menopause can provide clues on her daughter’s menopause. The age at which a woman reaches menopause is 85% genetically determined. However, other external factors such as lifestyle and food also have a significant impact.

A Research leader, Dr Jan-Peter de Bruin, from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University Medical Centre in Utrecht said that: “A woman with one or more first degree relatives with a history of early menopause is liable to experience earlier menopause herself. Further, this same woman is also expected to start becoming less fertile and to be completely infertile at an earlier age, thus being at greatly increased risk of remaining childless if she delays childbearing. A woman’s store of eggs declines throughout her life. When stores are exhausted this triggers the menopause.”

For males

For males, if a man has a low sperm count, it can suggests there may be an underlying genetic reason associated. Men suffering from chromosome abnormalities often lead to low sperm counts and these disorders can be passed on to their offspring.

Genetics do play a significant role on infertility to a certain extent, however there are other factors which adds up to it. Hence , if you are struggling with fertility problems, there are still chances to improve your fertility through good diet and regular exercise, and also acupuncture and chinese medicine treatment.

Healthy Diet Benefits for Infertility

Food and nutrition play a crucial role contributing to a healthy body and reproductive system. In fact, the building blocks for hormones are found in the food we consume. For instance, antioxidants in certain foods assist in protecting the egg and sperm from free radicals. In the other hand, chemicals added to some foods could be harmful to your health and fertility.
It was found that the increasing consumption of sugary sodas and fruit, starches, red meat and trans fat is a big factor contributing to the rising of infertility rates nowadays. According to Dr. Walter Willett M,D., our bodies digest bad carbs (cookies, cakes, cereals, sugary drinks, chips, and white bread) quickly, and turn them into blood sugar. Insulin is then released from pancreas into the bloodstream in order to drive down the blood-sugar spike. Previous studies showed that these high insulin levels could inhibit ovulation. It also showed that women with the highest glycemic load (measure of amount of bad carbs eaten and how quickly they’re turned into blood sugar) were more than 90 percent more likely to have ovulatory infertility than those with the lowest glycemic load.

What is a fertility diet?
A recently-performed study by Harvard showed an 80% decrease in infertility with lifestyle changes made by switching to a fertility diet.

Fertility diet is the type of diet which includes foods that are rich in certain nutrients needed for hormonal function, production and balance, fetal development, egg and sperm health, and many more. This diet is designed to aid your body in balancing existing fertility issues, and also building up the nutrient stores and constituents for a healthy child.

Fertility Diet Nutrition guidelines

Eat a lot of organic vegetables and fruits

Harmful herbicides and pesticides in conventional produce have been shown to negatively affect both male and female fertility.

Male exposure to pesticides is linked to altered sperm quality and sterility, while female exposure may interfere with puberty, menstruation and ovulation, and fertility. Studies have also shown organic vegetables and fruits to have more nutritional values.

Choose organic and grass fed meat

Cattles that are raised conventionally contain high levels of added hormones and antibiotics leading to the domination of estrogen.

In the other hand, grass fed meat is low in saturated fat, and is a good source of protein and essential fatty acids.

For you who have endometriosis, it is suggested to reduce the consumption of red meat has there is a correlation between high red meat consumption and endometriosis.

Eat high fibre foods with each meal

High blood sugar levels can be regulated with increasing the consumption of high-fibre food.

This can help to reduce fertility issues such as PCOS and induces healthy hormonal balance. High fibre foods are beans, dark leafy greens, fruits and vegetables, and wholegrain and wholemeal products.

Drink lots of clean water

It is strongly recommended to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of clean, purified or filtered water daily.

The best waters to choose from are reverse osmosis and distilled.

It is not recommended to have bottled water as there are higher chances for it to contribute to hormonal imbalance as there might be estrogen mimicking chemicals in it. Avoid tap water, as it might contain traces of harmful pesticides from agricultural runoff.

How Exercise Affects Your Fertility

YogaMany of you might be confuse is exercise has a good impact or bad ones to fertility level. This article will explain to you the benefits of regular exercise for women who want to conceive. However, there is also risk of infertility if one does too much exercise. Does too much exercise will affect women who have infertility issues?

According to researches, regular exercise can actually improve reproductive function. A study in Obstetrics and Gynaecology who analyse women with regular exercise, ( ie. 30 minutes or more daily) had reduced the risk of infertility due to ovulation disorders. Another study in 2009 about Human Reproduction and Harvard study have also found that fitness activity plays important role in increasing the chance of conceiving for a woman who want to have a baby.

So what are the tips regarding the exercise for women who are willing to get conceived

1. Find the balance

It is very important that you find the balance between extreme exercise and too little exercise. Some of the testimonies from women who got conceived include having regular exercise in their daily routines. Some also suggests that extreme exercise will affect your estrogen level and therefore reduce the chance of conceiving.

Dr. Schoolcraft says, intense exercise sessions cause the body to break down the proteins in muscles, producing ammonia, a pregnancy-inhibiting chemical.

“The extremes of exercise ” too much or too little” are never good,” Dr. Grifo says. “You need to find a balance between the two; that’s when your body functions optimally.”

It is recommended to have 3 to 5 times a week for around 30-45 minutes per session. The following type of exercise you can follow:

  • Gentle walking, 5 times a week, for 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • 2-3 1 hour sessions of yoga
  • Dancing
  • Zumba, 2-3 times a week ( Pre-conception Period, not during pregnancy)
  • Aerobics, 2-3 times a week
  • Leisurely bike riding ( Pre-conception Period, not during pregnancy)
  • Light jogging (Pre-conception Period, not during pregnancy)
  • Swimming

Exercise to avoid while trying to conceive:

  • Bikram yoga (hot yoga, raised body temperature)
  • Core strength training after ovulation, including core Pilates training
  • Exercise 7 days a week for more than 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • Running for many miles each day
  • Extreme boot camp training series
  • Exercise over an hour long
  • Any type of regular, strenuous training for sports (running, gymnastics, ballet, etc.)

Yoga is strongly recommended because not only it is good for your physical health but it is also good for your mental health.

There are five yoga poses that are recommended for pregnant women:

  • Standing mountain
  • Supported triangle
  • Supported Squat
  • Cat/Cow pose and Child’s pose
  • Belly Breathing

2. Healthy Weight

It is about making your body at a healthy enough to carry a baby. This means that you also need to make sure that your body is within a normal BMI range (18.5 to 24.9). This can be done with regular exercise but also healthy diet.

Real life testimony from Michelle who used to be a runner has reduced her exercise between 30 to 45 minutes a day and she got pregnant after that. She is now has four kids.

3. Healthy eating plan

This is strongly recommended for those who are overweight.

Trim calories and gradually up your exercise to reach a fertility-friendly BMI. Aim for 60 minutes of cardio five days a week, and strength-train for 30 minutes three times a week. Even so, “you can work out too hard even if you’re overweight,” Dr. David cautions. “Build up your tolerance slowly.”

In conclusion, regular exercise is still very essential for women who would like to conceive. The amount of exercise should be moderate around 3-5 times per week for 30-45 minutes. Apart from that, healthy diet and regular acupuncture are also important to reduce stress and regulate/enhance hormone levels. Acupuncture and regular exercise will enhance the fertility level and hence will give more chance of conceiving.

Preparation for natural fertility over 40

Time is ticking...

Time is ticking…

These days couples are trying to conceive late in their life cycle as more and more of them are focusing on their career goals and travelling. There is good and bad sides of this, the good side is of course to achieve their dreams of their own business. However, the side effects will be on their fertility because we need to accept the fact that after the age of 35, women’s fertility decline quite significantly. So, how can couples overcome this fear? Is it still possible for women over 40 to be conceived? How many percent of chance that couple over 40 can get pregnant?

This article will discuss about the above issues and how to overcome or be prepare for natural fertility for couples who want to conceive over the age of 40.

First of all, we need to understand the change in women’s menstrual cycle when they reach 40.  The condition of normal functioning follicle happens when the estrogen levels increase and signal the pituitary gland to release LH (Luteinizing Hormone). This LH then signals follicle to open and release a mature egg (ie. ovulation). After ovulation, then the corpus luteum triggers the progesterone level to increase and causing it to develop to be capable of nourishing a growing embryo.

As women reach 40, less and less menstrual cycle happen, this means there is lesser chance to get pregnant. Menopause is confirmed when women do not get their period for the whole year. This will vary for women, but it can happen between the ages of 40 to 55. Menopause could take 1-7 years to complete. During perimenopause (the stage before menopause), a woman over 40 can still conceive naturally and carry a baby to a term.

How to prepare for natural conception for women who are in perimenopause (ie. over 40)?

Here is our advice and it’s been proven that some of couples can still possible to conceive following this advice.

1. Fertility Diet

Fertility diet includes consuming only organic food (IE. meat, vegetables, eggs, etc.).

Add some Superfoods in your diet, such as Maca, royal jelly, egg, banana, broccoli, asparagus, avocado, spirulina, etc. Try to eat food with high in folic acid, antioxidants, green food and Omega 3.

2. Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been proven in many years to enhance the chance of getting pregnant. At Dr Christine clinic, we suggest that couple comes as often as possible to improve their fertility level of getting pregnant. There are many couples over 40 who are able to be conceived at age of over 40 with acupuncture treatment.

Acupuncture will increase the blood flow in women’s pelvic region and improve the hormones to produce progesterone and therefore increasing the chance of couple to get pregnant.

3.  Healthy Lifestyle

These include exercise; do not drink alcohol, no soda of any kind, no smoking, almost no sugar, and no trans-fats, no artificial.

The exercise include the following:

  • Fertility yoga
  • Meditation
  • Swimming
  • Pilates
  • Walking
  • Kegel exercise (IE. contracting and relaxing the pelvic floor muscles repeatedly)

4. Start to chart your cycle using the BBT Chart

It is now important if you are willing to get pregnant any time soon to chart your cycle. Therefore, you will know when you will be ovulating and when is your peak time. Women usually become fertile 2 or 3 days after menstruation. Do try to have intercourse on the day of ovulation. It is also strongly recommended for couples (men and women) to do acupuncture during ovulation as this will increase your chance to get pregnant.

5. Improve level of Cervical mucus

By drinking plenty of water (IE. 8 glasses or more), take omega essential fatty acid supplement daily), taking herbs.

6. Chinese medicine

Take Chinese medicine in conjunction with the acupuncture to improve your fertility level. This Chinese medicine will also increase the production of cervical mucus as well as nourishing the body as a whole. Hence, enhance the chance of natural conception for women over 40.

How to Balance Your Hormones After Birth Control

Hormonal Balance

Many people today has been using birth control since they are teenagers and some of the doctors actually prescribed birth control to some of their patients who suffer from Endometriosis or PCOS. Birth control could reduce pain, reduce the incidence of ovarian cyst or regulate your cycle for some time. However, this is just a short term relief because once you stop taking the pills then the symptoms will come to the surface again. Therefore, it is recommended for couples who want to conceive to stop from taking birth control. We will explain in the next paragraphs how to balance your hormones after birth control.

The first step is to Nourish and Cleanse the body.

  1. Fertility Cleansing

The body has lost some of the nutrition when using the birth control and therefore it needs to be nourished by using herbs. Not only that, but the liver has to metabolize synthetic hormones and becomes overloaded and taxed during birth control use. The liver helps remove toxins and some of fertility cleanses to remove excess hormones. We do recommend Chinese Traditional Medicine because it has been proven for thousands of years.   The Chinese herbs will nourish the body and help liver function normally again. The Chinese herbs will also supportive, toning and cleansing for the uterus.

Secondly, fertility cleansing is an excellent way for couples who want to conceive to create a clean slate and helps the body to respond and utilize other natural remedies better. Hence, fertility cleansing will increase their chance to get pregnant.

  1. Fertility Diet

The change of lifestyle is also very important as this will improve your body to balance the hormones. Healthy diet is strongly recommended for couples who want to conceive.

Did you know that birth control or pills will have some permanent damage to the healthy gut bacteria? That is why it is recommended to consume yogurt, pickles and sour cream to provide the body with probiotics or good bacteria.

Birth control also affects the levels of Vitamin B12, Vitamin E, Zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin B2, and folic acid. Therefore, it is necessary to take multivitamin, or supplements and whole food iron supplement.  Taking good probiotic supplement is also good because it will balance and maintain the pH levels in the vagina.

Eating plenty of foods that has high in calcium also is strongly recommended, since the use of birth control can also thin the bones. The food includes spinach, broccoli, sesame seeds, seaweed, chia seeds and cottage cheese.

The next stage after cleansing is Herbal support

The purpose is to restore the ovulation process and improve hormonal balance.

There are some herbs that are recommended for couples:

  1. Fem rebalance

You can get the supplements in any chemist store. This Fem Rebalance will help couples to balance their hormones and reduce stress as well as rapid weight loss or gain. The herbs include Licorice Rt., Vitex, Chaste tree berry, Rhodiola, borage, Maca, vervain root , sarsaparilla root, wild yam root and black cohosh.

It is best used for couples who go through a stage of healing after birth control as pregnancy preparation but not used while trying to conceive. The reason being is because the body needs at least 3-6 months to heal without actively trying to conceive.

  1. Maca

This is known for one of the superfood for male fertility. However, this can also support female’s endocrine system and this root is very nourishing to the body. This will support holistic hormonal balance and reduce stress.

  1. Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis)

This will nourish the body and promote the blood flow in the pelvis region. It can be used as females’ tonic and fertility herbs and it is highly recommended for those who try to conceive. This is also part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is one of the well-known ingredients that Dr Christine

  1. RejuvaFlow

This supplement will help you to ‘build the blood’ so that your menstruations period will be regular/normal again. Once your menstruation cycle becomes regular, then healthy cervical mucus production will be restored. This will increase the fertility level also for those who try to conceive.

  1. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

This has been used by many Chinese people since thousand years ago and has been proven that some of the herbs can enhance the fertility level. At Dr Christine Cui clinic we have our own TCM and they are plant based. This will also improve the blood flow in the pelvic region and nourish the body and balance your hormonal level. We can ensure you that there will be improvement in the body once you have started to take this Chinese medicine.

Stage 3.   Acupuncture and Fertility massage

Once the body has been healed and menstrual cycle has been restored, then the cervical mucus will also be produced. The couple can try to do some acupuncture or fertility massage to improve their fertility level.

At Dr Christine Cui clinic, we offer acupuncture for couples who want to conceive. The acupuncture stimulation of the reproductive, endocrine and neurological systems is aimed at ensuring an internal environment that supports reproductive health, fertility, healthy conceptions for women and men.

For women, Acupuncture not only stimulates the body’s ‘happy hormones’ (Endorphin), providing natural pain relief and easing anxiety, but also stimulates the normal flow of energy (Qi) through the body, providing a safe, drug-free and highly effective method for restoring mental, physical, emotional and hormonal balance.
