Postpartum Depression (PPD); which is also called as postnatal depression is a depression that affects women after the childbirth. The symptoms include: anxiety, stress, sadness, moodiness, reduced in sex appetite, low energy and changing in sleeping patterns.

The result shows that 63% of women who received acupuncture treatments reduced the level of depression compared to massage therapy.

Acupuncture treatment

Acupuncture is very beneficial during post-natal, as this can improve new mother’s emotional wellbeing and avoid ‘baby blues’. During the breastfeeding period, acupuncture can promote breast milk for the baby and reduce level of Lochia.

Another benefit also includes treatment for mothers who has post-partum bleeding and will restore their overall health and wellbeing. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine focus on improving ‘qi’ by nourishing the body of the baby and mother as well as reducing weak bladder.

It is important to treat postpartum depression, as it can be a potential risk for the new mother and baby. This could lead to self-destructive behaviour and unhealthy lifestyle. By doing acupuncture, the mother can have relaxation time and maintain her sense of well-being and as a result will provide a happy environment for the baby.
