How to Balance Your Hormones After Birth Control

Hormonal Balance

Many people today has been using birth control since they are teenagers and some of the doctors actually prescribed birth control to some of their patients who suffer from Endometriosis or PCOS. Birth control could reduce pain, reduce the incidence of ovarian cyst or regulate your cycle for some time. However, this is just a short term relief because once you stop taking the pills then the symptoms will come to the surface again. Therefore, it is recommended for couples who want to conceive to stop from taking birth control. We will explain in the next paragraphs how to balance your hormones after birth control.

The first step is to Nourish and Cleanse the body.

  1. Fertility Cleansing

The body has lost some of the nutrition when using the birth control and therefore it needs to be nourished by using herbs. Not only that, but the liver has to metabolize synthetic hormones and becomes overloaded and taxed during birth control use. The liver helps remove toxins and some of fertility cleanses to remove excess hormones. We do recommend Chinese Traditional Medicine because it has been proven for thousands of years.   The Chinese herbs will nourish the body and help liver function normally again. The Chinese herbs will also supportive, toning and cleansing for the uterus.

Secondly, fertility cleansing is an excellent way for couples who want to conceive to create a clean slate and helps the body to respond and utilize other natural remedies better. Hence, fertility cleansing will increase their chance to get pregnant.

  1. Fertility Diet

The change of lifestyle is also very important as this will improve your body to balance the hormones. Healthy diet is strongly recommended for couples who want to conceive.

Did you know that birth control or pills will have some permanent damage to the healthy gut bacteria? That is why it is recommended to consume yogurt, pickles and sour cream to provide the body with probiotics or good bacteria.

Birth control also affects the levels of Vitamin B12, Vitamin E, Zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin B2, and folic acid. Therefore, it is necessary to take multivitamin, or supplements and whole food iron supplement.  Taking good probiotic supplement is also good because it will balance and maintain the pH levels in the vagina.

Eating plenty of foods that has high in calcium also is strongly recommended, since the use of birth control can also thin the bones. The food includes spinach, broccoli, sesame seeds, seaweed, chia seeds and cottage cheese.

The next stage after cleansing is Herbal support

The purpose is to restore the ovulation process and improve hormonal balance.

There are some herbs that are recommended for couples:

  1. Fem rebalance

You can get the supplements in any chemist store. This Fem Rebalance will help couples to balance their hormones and reduce stress as well as rapid weight loss or gain. The herbs include Licorice Rt., Vitex, Chaste tree berry, Rhodiola, borage, Maca, vervain root , sarsaparilla root, wild yam root and black cohosh.

It is best used for couples who go through a stage of healing after birth control as pregnancy preparation but not used while trying to conceive. The reason being is because the body needs at least 3-6 months to heal without actively trying to conceive.

  1. Maca

This is known for one of the superfood for male fertility. However, this can also support female’s endocrine system and this root is very nourishing to the body. This will support holistic hormonal balance and reduce stress.

  1. Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis)

This will nourish the body and promote the blood flow in the pelvis region. It can be used as females’ tonic and fertility herbs and it is highly recommended for those who try to conceive. This is also part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is one of the well-known ingredients that Dr Christine

Male Fertility – Azoospermia Fertility

Usually there is 1 in every 20 males have some kind of infertility. There are different kinds of cases of male infertility such as; different shapes, no tails, two heads or no sperms at all. The male infertility usually cannot be seen with the naked eye.  A semen test is required to see if there is a sign of infertility.

There are many different causes of male infertility; however, we will focus on Azoospermia fertility in this article. Azoospermia Fertility happens when there is virtually no sperm count in each ejaculation.  This kind of infertility in men only present in 2% of the average male population.

The causes of Azoospermia Fertility

Now that the other causes of male infertility explained, we will discuss the main causes of Azoospermia fertility:

  • Genetic
  • Injury to the genitalia
  • Blockage in genitalia
  • Surgery effects on the male reproductive system
  • Infection to male reproductive system
  • Miscellaneous causes such as; illegal drug use, steroids or antibiotics, excessive alcohol consumption.

In short, the causes of male infertility are due to either sperm transport or sperm production. There is the possibility of not having sperms at all and the cause of this is because lower semen level.

The cure and treatments for Azoospermia Fertility

Depending on the cause of male infertility, the cure can be from getting prescribed medications to surgery.

For example; if there is blockage in genitalia, then the doctor will suggest you to go for operation.

Acupuncture in conjunction with Chinese herbal medicine can also part of the cure for Azoospermia fertility when the cause is due to hormonal problems.

According to the article wrote by Bidouee F, Shamsa A, Jalali M. regarding the“Effect of acupuncture on azoospermic male”, they tested a couple who was trying to conceive. He went to 2 acupuncture treatments every week for 10 weeks. The results shown that his sperm count has increased to 10 million/mL with 10% good and progressive motility and 60% normal shape.

Another research also proved that acupuncture is effective. The research was conducted by Siterman regarding the effect of acupuncture on 26 males with azoospermic fertility. The result shown that seven out of 26 patients had sperms in their ejaculation and surprisingly 4 out of 7 had a sperm count of nearly 100 million/mL.

Another study also conducted by Jason Z Kremer, when analysing the treatment of male infertility to obstructive Azoospermia with Acupuncture and Moxibustion had a positive result. This case report documented a 33 year old male with a history of 10 year obstructive azoospermia and receives acupuncture treatments. Just after three (3) times acupuncture treatments in conjunction with TCM, the couple conceived naturally without any medical assistance.

In conclusion, acupuncture in conjunction with Chinese herbal medicine can increase sperm count because it improves blood flow in testis area. Hence, acupuncture can become cured to patients with azoospermia fertility.

New Way Approaching Menopause symptoms VS HRT Treatment

Menopause Lane Sign 72

Menopause symptoms?

Menopause is a condition where woman’s menstrual period stop and she is unable to get pregnant naturally. There are some symptoms that women need to watch out for before they experience menopause. The average age of women who have menopause is around 50 years old (this may be vary).

When hormones of estrogen and progesterone starts to drop due to menopause, women will experience the following signs:

  • Hot flushes / Night sweats
  • Mood changes
  • Thirsty
  • Low sex drive / Vaginal dryness
  • Thinning hair and slower metabolism
  • Insomnia / Nightmares Etc.

Hot flushes can produce very inconvenience feeling of intense heat and in some cases can disrupt their pattern of sleeps.

It is still possible for women to conceive although there may be irregular menstruation. It is common thing to have skipped periods during peri-menopause. However, it is also necessary to check whether or not you are pregnant when you have skipped your period.

During the transition from peri-menopause to menopause it is recommended for women to have regular visits to doctor. The doctor will often suggest you to have screenings such as mammography, lipid, thyroid testing or colonoscopy.

What is HRT?

HRT is Hormone Replacement Treatment is a treatment used to augment body’s hormone level, either estrogen therapy or progesterone therapy.  This HRT is usually for women who undergo stage of menopause where the level of estrogen and progesterone drop significantly.  HRT is usually recommended to those who have menopause symptom in late 40.

However, the use of HRT has changed significantly when a large clinical trial found that it actually posed more health risks than benefits for one type of hormone therapy, especially for older postmenopausal women. As there is health hazards about HRT, doctors try to avoid prescribe this to patients. Dr Christine advises that using acupuncture is more natural way in eliminating menopause symptoms.

Menopause dietary advise

  1. Take supplements of Vitamin E, Zinc, magnesium, Vitamin D and calcium. These nutrients can prevent dry skin and normalise hormone levels
  2. Eat rich protein foods such as Turkey, cottage cheese, legumes and oats.
  3. Take calcium as your supplement and try avoid food that are high in phosphorous; which you can find in red meat.
  4. Reduce caffeine, sodium and alcohol
  5. Increase your vegetables, fruits and yogurt consumption. This food is good for your bones.
  6. Soya milk, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, tempeh, tofu, green beens and celery. These foods are high in phyto-oestrogens, which going to help you ease the hot flushes.
  7. Try to eat at least two servings of fish per week, preferably salmon or trout. If this is hard for you, take fish oil daily will help reducing heart disease risk.

How Acupuncture can assist in balancing the hormones and rejuvenating internal organ such as kidney, liver and spleen

Acupuncture with conjunction of Chinese medicine can reduce or eliminate all of symptoms in most of the cases. This treatment has been proved to relieve from mood changes and hot flushes among women who experience menopause.

According to study from journal Acupuncture in Medicine, Turkish researchers investigated 53 menopausal women. Twenty seven women received acupuncture twice a week for ten weeks. The result said that these women have reduced hot flushes significantly because it stabilises the body’s temperature.

Another study from Norway also reported that there is reduced intensity of hot flushes by night and by day with those women who received acupuncture for 12 weeks.

The third study done in larger scale by Prof. Avis and colleagues, with 209 women aged 45-60 who stopped their period for at least 3 months. They received 6 months of acupuncture treatment; the result proved that 36.7 % of them had fewer hot flashes per day compared to before treatment.

Therefore, acupuncture is highly recommended for those who experience menopause and is worth a try especially if you are not willing to get HRT treatment.

Natural Fertility

Excited couple finding out results of a pregnancy test sitting on the bed

At Dr Christine Fertility Clinic, we encourage women to conceive naturally by going to regular acupuncture treatments combine with Chinese herbal medicine.

We believe that women should monitor their body temperature in order to know when they start to ovulate. This is the best time for a couple to make love because this time is known to be the most fertile for women to conceive. Now that you know that waiting for ovulation period is important, the next step is to identify when you will be ovulating.

How do you know when you are ovulating?
Here are some of the signs:
• Mucus changes
• Vaginal Secretions of cervical fluid (ie. Increase stretchy fluid)
• Change in body temperature
• Change in sex hormones

The duration of ovulation is usually between 6 to 12 hours. If you are still unsure, it is also good to check with ovulation pee sticks.

Acupuncture Role to assist in natural fertility

1. Maintaining regular menstrual cycle.
Acupuncture can increase the flow in the pelvic area and therefore eliminating any blockages and treating hormone imbalances. The hormone imbalances can result in stress, endometriosis as well as irregular menstrual cycle. Eliminating this issue can improve the chance of being fertile.

2. Improving well-being and overall health for men and women.
Since the blood flow has increased because it has been stimulated through acupuncture, automatically the body can get better nourishments. The blood carries nutrients such as, sugar, oxygen and hormones. When the blood circulation is enhanced, the vital functions also become better and hence, improve the couples’ ability to conceive.

3. Strengthening the uterus lining by stimulating the blood flow to the uterus, enhance the possibility of conception.
This is also important for women who are in first trimester, as it will reduce the chance of miscarriages. Therefore, acupuncture is necessary in the first trimester not only during the process of conception.

4. Acupuncture combine with Chinese Herbal medicine (TCM), can give nourishment for both the fetus and women who try to conceive
Chinese herbal medicine (TCM) can stimulate blood flow in pelvic region and also improve vital organ function. By combining acupuncture and TCM, couples have higher chance to conceive.

5. Acupuncture can treat Endometriosis symptoms and increase chance of being conceive
Endometriosis is condition where the blood does not flow to the areas it should be. Professional acupuncturist is able to points to areas of the body where blood flow in pelvic region can be improved. Therefore, nourishes them with correct amount of hormones, oxygen and nutrients.

6. Balance the hormone and release endorphine levels, reducing stress and increase level of happiness.
The levels of testosterone in women need to be reduced if a woman is trying to conceive. Acupuncture can assist by regulating hormone imbalances and reduce testosterone level.
Not only the level of testosterone reduce, the endorphine levels also released; which results in less stress and increasing the ability to conceive.

7. Increase the quality and quantity of sperms
Over the past decade, the quality of sperms in men is reduced due to stress, imbalance hormones and other factor. Therefore, it is necessary for men to do acupuncture as it will impact the couple to conceive. According to research, men who received regular acupuncture (2 times a week) has better quality of sperms and increase the quantity as well. Hence, there is higher chance of conception for the couples who would like to have baby.

Success Rate
According to Dr Kenneth Snell from IVF Acupuncture Clinic in NSW, said that out of the women who received acupuncture treatment regularly, 70.8% of them conceived naturally. Not only that, he also said that 72% of them were aged between 30 to 40 years old. Therefore, do not lose hope if you already over 30 or 35 and has not been pregnant yet, there is still chance for you to conceive naturally.

Post Natal recovery through Acupuncture

Post Natal

Our acupuncture fertility clinic is not only focusing on fertility for couples who want to conceive, but we also focus on helping new mothers for post-natal recovery through acupuncture.

Acupuncture promotes the health of overall well-being for both the mother and baby. There are many things that acupuncture can offer you such as:

  • Recovery from baby blues or depression

It is common for new mothers who experience with the baby blues or depression.  Acupuncture can help by releasing endorphin into the body, which then makes the new mother feel happier and less stressed. It is also recommended that the mother receive extra treatment by taking Chinese herbal medicine to manage their well-being further so that the baby also can benefit from breastfeeding.

In short, acupuncture can help mothers to boost their self-esteem, endorphin levels, reduce anxiety and therefore recover from the baby blues.

  • Promote production of breast milk

Acupuncture can be an effective treatment for new mothers who have an insufficient supply of breast milk.

It is important for mothers to keep continue breastfeeding even if there is only small amounts while receiving acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The reason behind lack of breast milk is because there is not enough nourishment to support the mother’s health.  Other circumstances that affect mother’s health include long labour with excessive blood loss and birth trauma.

Acupuncture combines with Chinese herbal medicine is an effective tool to further nourish women’s body and regenerate mother’s blood as well as the body fluids.

  • Eliminate stress and promote happiness

Stress can make the chemical and hormones in our body imbalance. Acupuncture treatment assists mother to have a balance hormone by releasing ‘qi’ (life force) and stimulating areas in the body that are affected.  Once the hormone is balance, endorphins released and stress will be eliminated through regular acupuncture treatments.

  • Avoid mastitis

It is recommended for new mothers to breastfeed their babies in their first 6 months. However, this can be very traumatic experience for new mums who experience mastitis (inflammation in breast tissue). This caused by blocked milk duct that has not been cleared. The consequence of having mastitis is there will be insufficient flow of breast milk for breastfeeding, high fever, massive pain and inflammation.

Acupuncture not only can prevent mastitis, it can also be used to treat mastitis. Professional acupuncturist knows the specific points on the body that correspond with the diagnosis in order to accelerate the healing process.

Hence it is necessary to have acupuncture treatment as well as doctor consultation to ensure mother will not have further breasts infection. Through acupuncture, new mothers can be rest assured that they will be free from mastitis.

  • Decreasing Fatigue

As new mothers it is very difficult to find free time during the day. However, it is very important to set aside the time for themselves to recharge their body through acupuncture. By doing acupuncture treatment, mothers can have their own relaxation time, decrease fatigue, reduce stress and automatically transfer the happy hormones into the babies (for those who breastfeed).

  • Handling difficulty in urinary and postpartum pain

Acupuncture can eliminate the pain of postpartum and at the same time diminishing the urinary problem for new mothers.

  • Get slimmer body and healthy weight

Last but not least, this is the best part of acupuncture for new mothers who want to get back in shape. Acupuncture has been effective in treating women to get their healthy weight or return to their previous weight before having the baby.

Male Fertility and Acupuncture

Male Fertility

Male Fertility

The role of acupuncture in male fertility is very essential as it will increase the sperms count as well as improving the quality of the sperms (motility, numbers and shape). Over the past decade, male infertility has been known to be responsible for couple with difficulty in conceiving. According to study, there was 87% of sperms were rejected from sperm bank, meaning only 13% accepted due to low quality of sperms. (Source: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

There are many other alternatives for couple to conceive, including IVF or IUI procedures. However, these alternatives are usually expensive and there is no guaranty of success. With Acupuncture, not only it will increase 65% of success rate with IVF acupuncture treatment, but it will increase up to 90% live birth.

In regards to male infertility, acupuncture can increase the number of sperms as well as the quality of sperms; which then leads to successful conception.
The way acupuncture assist couple in conceiving include the following:

• Promotes blood flow
Just the same as women, acupuncture can increase blood flow in pelvic region; it can also promote circulation of blood to reproductive organs in men. As a result, it will increase oxygen and nutrients through the whole body for reproduction cell improvement.

• Diminish stress level
Acupuncture can reduce men stress level by stimulating part of the body that is affected. This includes balancing neurons cells in the brain as well as reproductive organs.

• Develop Endocrine System Function
Endocrine system produce secrete hormones that regulates primary functions in the body; which also include reproductive organs. These hormones then promote body’s growth, metabolism and sexual development and function.

Professional acupuncturist can stimulate the correct meridians in the body to boost endocrine function, improve overall well-being and increase the chance conceiving.

Other relevant factor

The other factor can also impact male’s infertility is the age factor, not many people aware that men over 40 can have an impact to difficulty in conceiving.  However, sperm quality can be improved with regular consumption of Chinese herbal medicine.

Secondly, it is also recommended that both couples conduct regular acupuncture treatment to boost chances of conceiving.

Evidence

According to research of Quantitative evaluation of spermatozoa ultrastructure after acupuncture treatment for idiopathic male infertility, proved that quality of the sperms has significantly increased after acupuncture treatment. The result also shown that there is a significant improvement in acrosome position and shape, nuclear shape, axonemal pattern and shape and accessory fibers of sperm organelles (source: “Fertility and Sterility” by Pei J et al Fertil Steril. 2005 Jul;84(1):141-7).

There is further evidence proven from Archives of Andrology by Siterman S et al Arch Androl. 1997 Sep-Oct;39(2):155-61; which also shown that infertile men with abnormal semen analysis can benefit from acupuncture due to improvement in total functional sperm fraction, percentage of viability and motility of sperms after receiving acupuncture treatments.

In both cases, group of men researched were doing two times a week of acupuncture treatments for five weeks period. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that infertile men should do acupuncture at least two times a week in order to have an effective result.

Why Acupuncture?

Acupuncture

Our goal is to not only to help our patients to get to their optimum health and well-being, but also to assist women to conceive.  There has been numerous use of acupuncture for treatment of varying diseases and symptoms associated with neurologic, gynaecological, and psychological disorders.

There is a saying goes “your body is a temple”. Acupuncture can help with health maintenance and prevention making sure your body is kept “holy”. For this reason, acupuncture therapy is an extremely versatile option with wonderful benefits to offer. Here are several best of the reasons why you should go for acupuncture:

1) Acupuncturist treats each patient individually tailored

Every person is unique and there is an interconnection of cells in that person’s body that function as part of an integrated whole. In other words, acupuncture treats the whole body, not just individual parts. The root of a symptom that two people are experiencing may be completely different and therefore a thorough health history is taken during the initial exam.

Acupuncture is also safe using disposable sterile needles without any risk of infection. Acupuncture needles are very different compared to hypodermic needles used for injections. They don’t hurt in the way that hypodermic needles do since they are very flexible and only the size of a hair.

2) Acupuncture boosts body immune system and restores self-healing ability

Acupuncture activates the body’s natural healing ability by treating the root causes of the health problem. Research shows that acupuncture triggers the body’s own mechanisms for producing its own pain relieving chemicals; endorphins and dopamine. The body then operates like a pharmacy that gives perfect “medication” for healing without any undesirable side effects!

Acupuncture can also boost the body’s immune system that is weakened sometimes by illness and/or certain treatments, poor lifestyle, and medications. The purpose of acupuncture is to find and treat the existing irregularities that are disrupting the Qi flow (read “chee”), our vital energy or power, and the immune system by focusing on the root causes.

3) Acupuncture can enhance women and men fertility

Acupuncture has proven to be effective tool in increasing the chance of successful rate for couple who want to conceive.

Dr Cui also recommends that Acupuncture should be combined with Chinese herbal medicine for patients to have more effective results in conceiving. A British survey also mentioned that acupuncture can increase woman’s chance to conceive by 65% and improve the likeliness of live birth by 91%.

Dr Cui who has been in practice for almost 25 years proved that acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine, enabled women to become pregnant. Furthermore, acupuncture can also treat women with Endometriosis, PCOS, uterine bleeding and menopause problems.

In conclusion, acupuncture works excellently and this safe, non-invasive, drug-free way of health therapy is worth a try.

How effective is Acupuncture in helping women with endometriosis to conceive naturally?

What is Endometriosis and the symptoms?

endometriosis1

Women who experiencing difficulty in conceiving could have endometriosis symptoms. Around three quarters of them would have painful menstruation or pelvic pain.  The severity of the symptoms is usually related to the misplaced tissue and not how much of the misplaced tissue there is.

The connection of fertility and Endometriosis is quite significant for women over the age of 25 who are trying to conceive.  The reason being is that endometrial cells release chemicals that affect the embryo’s early stage development, as well as interfere with the ability to conceive.

The benefits of acupuncture for women who suffer from Endometrosis  are as follows:

1. Acupuncture can increase blood flow in the pelvic area

Endometriosis caused by misplaced tissue, where the blood is flowing outside the uterus, thus causing pain and infertility. By increasing blood flow in the pelvic area, it nourishes this area with more nutrients, hormones and oxygen needed for women to conceive.

2. Decreasing stress level and improve body immune system

Acupuncture can improve both health and its immune system by stimulating different areas of the body.  It also can balance the hormone in the body, which plays an important role in eliminating endometriosis symptoms. Hence, it will improve the chance of conceiving.

We believe that women can overcome endometriosis by having regular acupuncture, as well as consuming Chinese herbal medicine. It facilitates the free flow of energy through the body, alleviating the pain and discomfort associated with Endometriosis  (source:Raffless medical group)

Successful Story

There are success stories that you can find out there about how acupuncture can help you get healed. Here is one of the inspiring stories from Carolina, Venezuela who has gone through the pain of having Endometriosis for years and finally she could get pregnant by doing acupuncture.

“My thoughts gradually got more and more positive by the day, and with my expert acupuncture treatment guess what? I don’t remember OR better yet, I forbid myself to remember what that pain was like. Guess what the gyno said after 10 sessions of acupuncture? Your endometriomas are gone! “

You can found out more of women success stories on : endo-resolved.com

Further Study on Acupuncture and Endometriosis

A study from Cochrane Database of Systematic Review has released “Acupuncture for pain in endometriosis”, which determined the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for pain in endometriosis. The result was that “The total effective rate (‘cured’, ‘significantly effective’ or ‘effective’) for auricular acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine was 91.9% and 60%, respectively (risk ratio 3.04, 95% confidence interval 1.65 to 5.62, P = 0.0004).” (source: PubMed health)

This means that Acupuncture is proven to be effective and safe way in managing the pain of Endometriosis, however further studies are still needed to assess various types of acupuncture in comparison to conventional therapies.

chinese herbal medicine

In addition to acupuncture treatment, Dr Cui also recommends the use of Chinese herbal medicine as it is proven that Chinese herbal medicine can be very effective. There is research to support this fact in the following articles:

      • Ried K, Stuart K. Efficacy of traditional Chinese herbal medicine in the management of female infertility: a systematic review. Complementary Therapies in Medicine 2011; 19(6): 319-331, by PubMed Health, said that:

“ Our review suggests that management of female infertility with Chinese Herbal Medicine can improve pregnancy rates 2-fold within a 4 month period compared with Western Medical fertility drug therapy or IVF. Assessment of the quality of the menstrual cycle, integral to TCM diagnosis, appears to be fundamental to successful treatment of female infertility. “ (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0034503/)

• Inoue T et al, OJOG, Vol. 3, No. 1A (2013) of Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology

“the oocyte development rate was significantly higher (58.0%) after herbal medicine intake than before (32.5%; p = 0.0003). Moreover, the successful pregnancy rate was significantly higher after intake than before (6.9% versus 0%; p = 0.0111). Herbal medicine may constitute a useful adjunct to assisted reproductive technology in women.” (http://www.scirp.org/journal/CTA.aspx?paperID=27774)

Treating Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Infertility With Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine and TLC

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (P.C.O.S., for short) is a medical condition caused by an imbalance of sex hormones in a woman’s body. Because it is an endocrine disorder – one that is caused by irregularities of the core hormonal glands that regulate and maintain internal equilibrium or homeostasis – the symptoms of P.C.O.S. vary in their type and intensity among women. What is common though, is an increased risk of developing a number of serious diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, cancers of the uterus and the reproductive system, and especially, infertility.

Figure 1: “Grape Me”; Artist’s conception of P.C.O.S.
Source: Claire Graubner; Flickr.com

The Public Health Association of Australia estimates that 10 to 12% of the Australian female population – meaning about 1.5 million women – suffer from P.C.O.S, and other studies put the range even higher – at around 12 to 21%. And while there isn’t a cure, there are many ways to treat and control the seriousness of P.C.O.S. as it relates to infertility.

Approaching P.C.O.S. with Acupuncture

Acupuncture in the ancient art of Chinese medicine has played an important role in treating P.C.O.S. in women, by helping regulate menstrual cycles and bringing the female body back in sync with itself. Unlike allopathic drugs, which focus purely on breaking the cycle of infertility and provide uniform, one-size-fits-all treatments, acupunctural therapy for P.C.O.S. can be tailored to each woman’s unique hormonal levels, however minute they might be.

Gentle Healing Needles

As paradoxical as it may seem, acupuncture’s gentle needles – both the traditional and the electro kind – are considered some of the best alternative treatments for infertility caused by P.C.O.S. Because one of the main reasons for this kind of infertility is the production of higher-than-normal levels of male hormones like testosterone in the female body, the key to increasing fertility is to reduce the levels of androgens in a woman’s body.

And acupuncture does just that. By limiting the activity of the sympathetic nervous system – the primal part of your body that controls the famous flight-or-fight mechanism, leading to the production of hormones like testosterone – acupunctural therapy helps soothe and heal the hormonal system into producing less fighting hormones and more reproductive ones like estrogen, which help enhance a woman’s fertility cycle – mainly ovulation and menstruation.

Here’s a nifty video explaining the effect of hormones on the reproductive cycle – and how P.C.O.S. is caused.

Combining Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

The best part about acupuncture is that it can be used simultaneously with other forms of medicine – including traditional Chinese herbs.

A recent medical paper, for instance, lists a number of traditional Chinese herbs that can be used to treat infertility and P.C.O.S. in women – and almost all of them can be used in conjunction with acupuncture.

Many Roads to a Better Quality of Life

By pinpointing (quite literally) the specific imbalances in a woman’s body, acupuncture is a long-lasting treatment for infertility due to P.C.O.S. – all without the harmful side-effects of traditional allopathic drugs like birth control pills. It is a self-sustaining method that allows the body to heal itself back into the rhythm of reproduction, helping women everywhere live long and fulfilling lives.
